Risk of Rehospitalization and Death in Patients Hospitalized Due to Asthma

BackgroundAsthma is a heterogeneous inflammatory airway disease that continues to cause considerable morbidity across the world, with poor asthma control leading hospitalizations.ObjectiveThe present study investigated risk of rehospitalization, mortality, and management patients who had been hospitalized because an exacerbation.MethodsNational Swedish health registries were linked for 6 years or older admitted hospital (index date) between January 1, 2006, December 31, 2015. Exacerbations defined as asthma-related hospitalization, emergency visits, collection oral steroids. Patients followed rehospitalizations 12 months after index date, care resource utilization treatment 36 months, mortality end. Regression models time-to-event analyses applied assess factors rehospitalization mortality.ResultsA total 15,691 (mean age, 51.5 years; 63% females) included, whom 1,892 (12%) rehospitalized within months. Rehospitalized markedly increased subsequent (adjusted hazard ratio, 2.80; 95% CI, 1.95-4.01) compared those not rehospitalized.
